Student Research Guide WQ24/ Effects of AI Plagiarism

Student Research Guide for Library 201/ Noah Pelletier

Major Findings From This Research

Major findings of my Research Guide include the knowledge and background information of how artificial intelligence actually works and what is considered to be the learning process of those applications. Not only that but the prevalence of AI and it's usage in classrooms and what it can do to impact the educational system and it's integrity, unknowingly most students were not aware that AI plagiarizes popular news articles, journalists, and authors alike to gain the "intelligence" it currently has. In an article by Randy Riddle a senior consultant at Duke Learning Innovation he wrote "There’s not one simple technology solution to student plagiarism or student use of AI tools in their work. Some high schools and institutions are blocking access to ChatGPT and AI services by students. However, we all know that some students will be determined and smart enough to bypass these technology obstacles." (Riddle). With the upbringing of these applications such as ChatGPT and Google Bard, one thing I found was AI detection programs that's whole purpose was to use AI to basically detect AI. But alongside the creation of AI detection software was the creation of AI paraphrasing tools that were dedicated to re-wording AI written articles to avoid detection from these platforms. One important takeaway is that the constant battle to avoid artificial intelligence plagiarism in a classroom is the utilization of AI to fight against it, and recognizing the back and forth battle between the two of them.

Research Advice and Reflection

Advice for future researchers:

For future researchers I definitely stress that although information might feel limited, definitely utilize your resources to their maximum capabilities and throw in some of your own input as well. I also believe giving yourself time to learn the program that you will be writing about, try testing the capacity of ChatGPT and other neighboring artificial intelligence programs. This topic definitely has some holes in it currently but well-informing yourself with the program and understanding how other peoples perspective holds onto it can help fill those holes up.

Reflection on research experience:

  1. How did it go?

I believe I made great progress on finding evidence and defining the problem of artificial intelligence and how its going to impact classrooms

  1. Where did you get hung up?

There was definitely a lack of evidence on the matter of artificial intelligence plagiarizing and how its affecting classrooms, but there was still some good information that supported my claims and backed them up

  1. What was the best  (most interesting or exciting to you) part?

The most interesting part of this research for me was seeing how many school districts are discussing the problem of artificial intelligence, whether it be deep-fakes, environmental impact, or how its going to affect students as a whole.

  1. How did your interest in the topic change after investigating it more closely?

I will say I am definitely more interested in how artificial intelligence will continue to grow, and how it's going to impact classrooms in the future and what our government and educational system will do to combat it.
