Student Research Guide: Winter 2022 - ADHD Nature vs Nurture: Home

by Emalee Stanforth

Introduction to the Topic

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder, otherwise known as ADHD and ADD, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is commonly diagnosed when the subject is a child. ADHD is complex and because of this doctors have an incredibly hard time treating patients. Everyone experiences symptoms at different levels of severity and some cases are more difficult to tackle than others. Doctors normally prescribe stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin. However in order to get the best results multi-treatment plans are used; they consist of medication, behavioral therapy, school accommodations (504 Plan), exercise, restriction of certain foods, and the use of some vitamin supplements. In the hope to better treat the disorder, doctors explore the patient's environment versus the patient's genetics and how they can worsen or better the patients' symptoms.

Details are in the caption following the image

This graph shows the relationship between the patients who report predominantly hyperactivate traits and cohortative disorders. As well as the impact of significant life events on those who are predominantly hyperactive. No correlation was found in those who report mainly inattentive traits.

It allows someone who is not familiar with ADHD get information on what it is, treatments, and the risks that come with the disorder. The source also briefly touches the topic of environment verses genetic factor by covering the genetic mutation, prenatal smoking, and exposure to chemicals.
