Media Literacy Guide: Satire and Tabloids

Determining what is fake news is necessary and can be difficult. This research guide's purpose is to explain steps for finding the facts, how to use one's judgment and give examples for clarification.

Definitions of Satirical and Tabloid news

Some news stories are not news at all but...SATIRE or TABLOIDS


SATIRE: 

1a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn

2: trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly

Example: The Onion

TABLOID:

1: a newspaper whose pages, usually five columns wide, are about one-half the size of a standard-sized newspaper page.

2: a newspaper this size concentrating on sensational and lurid news, usually heavily illustrated.

3: a short form or version; condensation; synopsis; summary.
